Trichology: diagnosing and treating hair loss

Trichology is the branch of medicine that studies hair and the scalp. Before deciding on a treatment — or a transplant — you need to find the cause of your hair loss.

What is trichology?

Trichology is the branch of medicine focused on hair and, above all, on scalp conditions. Its goal is to find the real cause of hair loss to define the right treatment — which isn’t always surgical.

What conditions does trichology treat?

  • Androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) in men and women.
  • Alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that often causes bald patches.
  • Other autoimmune scalp conditions.
  • Female hair loss, which often has different causes than in men.

What is a trichology visit like?

We review your history, your symptoms and your scalp with the help of trichoscopy: a magnified exam that shows the hair and scalp in detail. With that information, the diagnosis and treatment plan are defined.

Conservative treatments with follow-up

Trichology treatments are conservative and require regular visits — every two to four weeks — to assess your response. That’s why they’re best suited to patients who live in or near Hermosillo.

Trichology and hair transplants

Trichology is also the first step before a hair transplant: it confirms that the cause of your hair loss is pattern baldness and that a transplant is the best option for you. If you live in the U.S., a transplant is the more practical option, since it doesn’t require frequent visits and follow-up can be done online.

When should I see a doctor about hair loss?

If you notice more hair than usual on your pillow, brush or shower, bald patches, a receding hairline or changes in your scalp, it’s a good time for an assessment.

Is alopecia areata treated with a transplant?

Usually not. It’s an autoimmune condition and is treated medically, with regular follow-up.

What is trichoscopy?

It’s a magnified exam of the hair and scalp that helps identify the cause of hair loss.
